Our success is proven worldwide

Training works. Over an 18-month period, we’ve helped high-risk drivers improve their FICO® Safe Driving Score by 70%, reduce speeding by up to 85%, and reduce distractions by up to 88%!

Drivers get individualized FICO® Safe Driving Score

Solera has partnered with FICO®, the leader in industry analytics, so that drivers can see and work on their individual FICO® Safe Driving Scores. FICO scoring is validated to predict the likelihood of a driver being involved in a collision.

It’s all in the app — no hardware required

Whereas many systems require proprietary hardware, Solera’s MentorSM app uses smartphone sensors to collect and analyze risk-predictive driver behaviors like speeding and phone distraction. Personalized, data-based driver safety training is then delivered through the same smartphone.

How it works

Short, interactive training modules lasting 3 to 5 minutes focus on areas where data indicates remediation is needed. Risky habits like speeding, distracted driving, tailgating, hard turns, hard braking, poor lane changes, and more all have dedicated training modules.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions on driver safety training

What is driver safety training, and why is it important?

Driver safety training educates drivers on safe driving practices and the specific behaviors that minimize or maximize risk. Fleet driver safety training for commercial truck drivers is specialized instruction that addresses the specific challenges and responsibilities of operating large vehicles such as semi-trucks, trailers, and tankers. Fleet driver safety training can help fleets reduce collisions and their impact on human safety and the fleet’s business operations. Driver safety training can also reduce the expensive litigation that inevitably follows a crash. It can also reduce fuel costs since risky driving habits can hugely influence fuel consumption.

How can Solera driver safety training improve fleet safety?

To improve fleet safety, Solera driver safety training uses a multi-faceted approach based on a deep understanding of how drivers actually learn. The MentorSM app uses smartphone sensors to collect and analyze risk-predictive driver behaviors like speeding and device-related distraction. Training modules are short, with most lasting only three to five minutes, and they’re custom-selected for each driver, focusing on areas where the data says training is needed most, including high-risk behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving, tailgating, hard turns, hard braking, or poor lane changes.

How does your safety training address distracted driving?

Fleets can utilize smartphone telematics provided by the Mentor app to measure risky driving behaviors, including phone distractions. Other technologies, such as in-cab video, can watch drivers for distracted behaviors and issue real-time alerts. Finally, fleets must be clear about the rules and consequences for drivers who consistently allow themselves to become distracted. Truly successful efforts to address distracted driving will require a collective shift in mindset as a major component of building a safety culture. Approximately 94% of crashes are caused by driver attitude and behavior, including yielding to distractions. This underscores the urgency of cultivating a genuine safety culture to encourage safer driving habits.

How often should fleet drivers undergo safety training?

Fleet driver safety training should be conducted regularly, although the scheduling will vary based on several factors, including regulatory requirements, fleet requirements, and the driver’s risk score and driving record. Fleets should provide training to each new driver as they join the fleet, followed by annual, semi-annual, or even monthly refresher training. Specific mitigation training should be scheduled immediately if risky driving habits are consistently observed. Training should also be initiated soon after an incident.

How do you track and measure driver safety performance post-training?

Driver safety performance can be measured via their FICO® Safe Driving Score, which predicts the likelihood of an incident. It can also be monitored post-training continually via the Mentor app. Using the Solera fleet driver safety training system, high-risk drivers have improved their safety scores by up to 51% after just six months of training and up to 70% after 18 months. Speeding was reduced by up to 85%, and distracted driving by up to 88%, also after 18 months.

How can driver safety training reduce accidents and insurance costs?

Driver safety training is an essential part of creating a fleet-wide Crash-Free Culture®. Safety training makes drivers aware of their own risky habits, such as speeding, distracted driving, tailgating, hard turns, hard braking, poor lane changes, or even dangerous parking. Data can be used to promote friendly safe-driving competitions and safety-focused conversations. Improved fleet crash statistics can keep premium costs from rising and even help lower them. Fewer crashes also mean less litigation.

How can I identify high-risk drivers?

All drivers receive a DriverINDEX®Score, which combines collision, incident, and license check data, plus, optionally, RoadRISK® results, in one driver score. This facilitates benchmarking and identification of an organization’s most at-risk drivers for training and coaching. In addition, through eDriving’s partnership with industry analytics leader FICO®, drivers receive an individual FICO® Safe Driving Score validated to predict the likelihood of a driver being involved in a crash or incident.
